Life needs the cooperation of all individuals

العلامة السيد علي فضل الله Sayyed Ali fadlullah

 The first sermon

Allah, The Most Exalted, says in His Glorious Book:  And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.. Allah, The Most Exalted, speaks the truth.

Man, in this life, no matter how capable and powerful he may become, would still need others to get about in fulfilling his needs and managing his affairs. Life would not be fully integrated until each man gives all what he has to others.  Moreover, it will not be stable or develop if each one decides to isolate himself

.Islam has stressed the need for cooperation in the society. It held every individual who possesses a knowledge, an ability, a power, an experience an opinion and a wealth… responsible for sharing them with others.  These potentials that he was entrusted with are not totally his own, for the others have a share in them . Thus, it is impermissible to monopolize them and act in a selfish and miserly way. That is why Allah, The Most Exalted ordered us to:  cooperate in righteousness and piety…. Cooperation in Allah, The Most Exalted’s view is not an option. It is a duty. Whenever God graced someone with a virtue or an advantage, He coupled it with a duty to help those who need them and   ensured him that he would be asked about this  in the Hereafter.    Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.

The Hadiths have clearly shown the great impact on man and his life whether in this life or in the other when one observes his duty towards others: All creatures are the family of God: and He loves most those who are kindest to His family.”
The Hadiths also  urged the Muslim  not to  wait for his brother to ask him for help , but  to take the initiative to help him before he asks: The Messenger (p.) said: He  who goes a distance to help his Muslim brother until he completes it, Allah will steady his feet on the Day when feet shall waver and slip. And : Any believer who relieves his fellow believer of a distress, Allah will relieve him of a distress in the hereafter. And if any believer comes to the aid of one who is oppressed, that would be better than fasting for a whole month and performing i’tikaf in the Sacred Mosque.  Another Hadith says: When a believer shall come forth from his grave, a form will emerge with him from his grave and say to him, ‘Enjoy the honor and happiness of Allah; Allah gives you the glad tidings of goodness.’ Then it shall go along with him giving him similar glad tidings along the way.

When he comes to something terrifying, the form shall say, ‘this is not for you,’ and when it comes to something good, it shall say, ‘this is for you.’ Thus it will continue with him, comforting him from what he fears and giving him glad tidings of what he desires until it stands with him before Allah . When he is instructed to enter Paradise, the form shall say to him, ‘Enjoy Paradise, for Allah [M.G] has instructed you to enter it.’ He shall say to it, ‘Who are you? May Allah have mercy upon you, for you gave me glad tidings when I came forth from my grave and you accompanied me in my journey and have informed me of good news from my Lord.’ ‘I am the happiness that you brought to your (believing) brothers in the world,’ it shall reply, ‘I was made from that joy so that I may help you and offer you company in your loneliness.

This is the reward in the Hereafter. As for this world, Allah, The Most Exalted, promised to help the Muslim as long as he helps his brother. But if he thinks only about himself and his family and does not care for the needs of others he would be in the view of the Holy Quran one who falsely denies the Religion: Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?

For that is the one who drives away the orphan

And does not encourage the feeding of the poor. So woe to those who pray

[But] who are heedless of their prayer –

Those who make show [of their deeds]

And withhold [simple] assistance.

Imam As-Sadiq(a.s.) says that any Muslim who does not help his/her Muslim  brother/sister  in an errand he is able to  help him/her in achieving it, Allah, The Most Exalted, will not look into any of his needs on the Day of Judgment . Furthermore, since this indifference will have a negative impact on life, Allah, The Most Exalted, will not bless the capabilities and potentials of those who do not shoulder their responsibility of helping those who are capable of providing help .And there are  several  Hadiths that indicate that Allah, The Most Exalted, will not continue to  bestow His graces on those who do not help others and give them to those who deserve them more.

Dear loved ones: in these difficult circumstances our society suffers from, we are in a dire need to enhance the spirit of collaboration and cooperation  and  offer extended hands  in every neighborhood , village and town or mosque, for this is the only way  to lessen the impact of this suffocating crisis.

By this we show that we are humans and that we shoulder or responsibilities, for we cannot be true believers until we love for our brothers what we love for ourselves and portray the image the Prophet(p.) talked about when he said : «The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever».

We have to reconstruct the picture that the Ansar drew when they shared everything they had withthe Muhajireen  … the picture which the Quran described as: As for those who had settled in the city and ˹embraced˺ the faith before ˹the arrival of˺ the emigrants, they love whoever immigrates to them, never having a desire in their hearts for whatever ˹of the gains˺ is given to the emigrants. They give ˹the emigrants˺ preference over themselves even though they may be in need. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successful.

The second sermon

Worshippers of Allah, The Most Exalted: I advise you and myself with what the Commander of the Faithful(a.s.) advised us when he said: Be careful of your duty to Allah with respect to His people as well as His places, for verily you will be answerable even for the places [you frequented] and the animals. The will he left us, and all the people who love and follow him, advises us to shoulder our responsibility in preserving the land and those who live on it. Allah, The Most Exalted, will not only ask them about their prayer and fasting and all the other religious duties, but also if  they have performed their duties towards His servants : did they seek to preserve their freedom and dignity  or did they leave them under the oppression of the tyrants and did they defend the lands or left them to be conquered by the occupiers and invaders ?  When we shoulder this responsibility we will become more capable of facing challenges.
We begin by  Lebanon where the number  of those infected by the Coronavirus  is once again relatively increasing … That is why we call, yet again,   on the new comers and the residents to strictly abide by the required measurements and consider this a religious  moral , humane and national duty. At the same time, we call on the government to be strict in observing the deterring measures.

As for the living conditions, the suffering of the Lebanese continues to increase, after it has become clear that its main cause is the rise in the price of the dollar, especially that all promises and measures to halt this rise have failed, including the measures to curb the black market.

Therefore, we, once more, call on the government to shoulder its responsibility in stopping this continuous draining and speed up the process of taking the decisions that ease the burdens of the living crisis that threatens to cause a big explosion or chaos, especially after the Lebanese are no longer able to buy their basic and essential daily needs of food and the like, which will undermine the security and stability of the country.

In this respect, we renew our  support to the call for a state of financial emergency  to deal with this collapse, after it has become clear  that it is the result of internal and external causes.

If the government has chosen to resort to the IMF to solve the problem of currency liquidity, it has to be earnest and serious in following up its choice and speed up the taking of the measures of reform to restore the logic of the state and respond to the international conditions for providing assistance. It should also conduct the negotiations with the IMF based on a unified and strong logic that stands on  unified figures and a unified  internal front , although we do not envisage that this option  will constitute a solution, due to  the miserable state of the government and the imposed conditions, especially that it has become clear that resolving the financial crisis  is associated firmly linked with the political conditions and the options the Lebanese state will take internally and  in the context of foreign relations .

As for the dialogue that was convened, we had hoped, along with the Lebanese, that it would have witnessed the participation of all parties to be fruitful. Yet the boycott that took place demonstrated   the extent of the current division, which we are afraid that it would lead, if it continues, to have a big negative impact, at a time the country is in a dire need to unify all efforts and potentials to get the contry out of the dark tunnel it has plunged in.

Based on this, we call on all political  parties to have mercy on this country and its citizens  and to neglect in their stances any partisan or sectarian calculations  and think only of the country’s interests  to ensure the return to a serious  dialogue that will help in forming a unified national stand  regarding all issues, whether economic  or the ones that have to do with foreign relations  or the consequences of the Cesar Act , which are vital to all citizens , since  the crises that have inflicted the country doe not hit one particular party or one sect . They hit all parties and sects and they cannot be overcome except by the cooperation of all of them.

Lastly we warn all those who take to the street from those who infiltrate their ranks to   implement their own agenda that abuses their (protesters)image. We also call on the security forces to perform their duty of preserving the freedom of speech as well as preventing any acts of destruction of public and private properties.  We also call on the media and the press to remain free forums for all political diverse views and to exclude all those who use provocative rhetoric that threaten civil peace.
